An advocate of the High Court of South Africa, Phathudi Mpahlele is a distinguished business leader and lawyer. He is a Council Member of the Agricutural Research Council of South Africa and has sat on boards of directors of a number of state-owned companies in South Africa, such as the Air Traffic Navigation Services of South Africa and the Tshwane Housing Company of South Africa. He is also former director of Milk South Africa Pty Limited, and NTK Limpopo Agricultural Limited. Phathudi was previously Director of Legal Services in the Department of Public Enterprises of South Africa.
